The Mass for Children
| Guest reviewer | A group of mums from the Parish of St Peter & St Paul |
Do your children understand & enjoy participating in Mass? Do they feel a part of what is going on? Or apart from what is happening? Do you feel equipped to explain the Mass in terms your children can understand and relate to?
If, in common with many parents, your answers to these questions are, "No, No, Yes, No," you might want to consider a small investment in a book specifically designed to lead children through the Mass.
While there are a variety of such books available, a particularly good example is The Mass for Children by Rev Jude Winkler. Using simple language, it not only explains the origins of Mass, but also talks the reader through the Mass, explaining the purpose of each stage of the celebration. It even gives instruction on when to sit, stand or kneel, together with simple explanations of the actions of the Priest during the service.
Eilish Owen said of this book:
"I like this book because it is easy to follow. Children can understand it as it is clearly laid out. It explains the Mass clearly in red and has dark printing for what the people say. It has good pictures that show you what the priest is doing. I think it would be good for people under nine."
Eilish wrote that review when she was seven years old. Eilish was preparing for her first Holy Communion, which she celebrated in June 2000.
Our children are the future of our Church. A child's Mass book represents a small investment in that future, and also gives parents the opportunity to share the special experience of the Mass more fully with their children. Who knows, it might even bring the Mass more fully alive for yourselves!
