Daria in Is It College Yet?

The DVD cover for IICY

A second opinion

by Shadow

Shadow obtained the DVD a few days before the official release date. Here's Shadow's review.
Audio First off, the bonus episodes Lucky Strike and Boxing Daria (neither of which are on the VHS) had all of the background music erased. For the most part, this isn't a big change. And it was expected, since that's how it was on the IIFY DVD. However, it does seem awkward when there's an obvious pause during an exterior shot of the Morgendorffer home, or Lawndale High, or where there should have been a commercial bumper.

In the actual movie, however, there are more noticeable changes. The background music was again deleted, and replaced with stock music. I didn't really notice it until later in the movie, though.

Besides the annoying music crap that MTV stuck us with here, the audio is pretty good. I couldn't see, or hear, rather, any flaws in the audio.

Video Ah, the video. I saw absolutely nothing wrong with the video. I could've sworn I was watching it being broadcast on MTV. Clear, crisp, perfect. No complaints here.
Menus The menus were simple and easy to use, and at first, it even replays a little bit of Splendora's College Try (Gives Me Blisters) (IICY's main theme). This is stupid, but when you select a feature (like the extras), little graduation hats fly up from the bottom of the screen. I thought that was cool. Just wanted to point it out.

However, the scene selection sucks. There are only five chapter markers in the entire movie. Five. Five. And none in the bonus eps, so that's suckage-y if you missed something and want to go back and see it, without reliving ten minutes of the movie.

Extras Not many extras on this one. Unlike IIFY which had the Mystik Spiral music video, and the end-of-film "outtakes", this DVD only had character profiles and the two extra episodes (which are pretty spiffy, I'll admit). If it does have the advertised "character sketches", I have yet to find them.

Again, each episode contains the complete main sequence (whee!), and if there is any background music that was replaced, I didn't notice it being there at all. The alter egos are still intact with the credits at the end of the eps, but instead of no music (as in the IIFY DVD), you get to listen to the main theme again.

The movie's end credits also have the alter egos, but there's some new background tune put in there. Not Incubus's Drive or Supergrass's Time to Go. Also, Look Back In Annoyance isn't on here. Which is really disappointing. Hopefully if MTV does release the series on DVD, they'll include that somewhere, or on a separate DVD with that "behind the scenes" special.

Packaging Comes in a keep case. What's there to say about it? Uh, the image on the front cover (with Jane looking at Daria at graduation) is screwed up (which is really noticable in Jane's eyes). That's my only complaint here.
Final Rating For $19.50, you get quite a package in this little DVD. Though I'll admit, the expected music changes were disappointing, they weren't exactly noticeable, and what it lacks in extras and scene selection options, it makes up for with the movie's general content. And the bonus eps (which I guess I haven't exactly been considering "extras") are great too. Hell, I'd dish out twenty bucks just to watch the segment in Lucky Strike about "Ken", to see that substitute call Kevin "QB", and to see the flashback sequences in Boxing Daria (the one featuring little Quinn being especially cute.).

Overall, a great DVD. Underpriced, in my biased opinion. So go buy a copy now. NOW. Help get the series released on DVD, yadda, yadda, yadda. :P
