To view a Region One NTSC DVD on a television, you
need:
- A DVD player that can
play Region One NTSC DVDs, connected to
- A TV that can display
the video signal the DVD player produces when it
plays an NTSC DVD
Domestic DVD
players sold in the UK and elsewhere in Europe are set to
play only Region Two disks. However, quite a number of
these Region Two players feature on this interesting
site. On 17.1.02,
the UK retailer Comet (online - shops)
was selling the Oritron DVD1030 player for just under £90.
Many TVs sold
in the last few years in the UK (and probably in many
other countries) are multi-system, capable of making
sense of real PAL signals and the psuedo-PAL signals some PAL equipment
produces when it plays NTSC media. Check in the TV
manual, or on the box the TV came in (look for phrases
like "NTSC playback compatible"), or ask your
TV dealer.

On 28.6.02, the Canadian
merchant DVD Box
Office was
advertising both Daria DVDs, with free worldwide
shipping, for $25.95 CAN each. That's Canadian dollars;
on that date, about $17.10 USD, about 17.30 EUR,
about $30.40 AUD, or about £11.20 GBP.
Are they really Region One
only?
Investigations
by fans in the UK have shown that the Daria
DVDs they received were in fact region-free,
meaning they can be played on NTSC-compatible
equipment in any DVD region. Was this an error?
Was this one batch of disks? Are they all region-free?
Only the manufacturers know, and they're not
telling!
If
you decide to order one of the DVDs, there's no guarantee
that the disk you get will be region-free, and,
since it's sold as Region One, you'll have no
recourse if Region One is what you get. That
said, I've not yet heard of any fan whose disk
did turn out really to be Region One only!
If
the disk you get is region-free, you'll
be able to watch it on a television if

| Here are
the results of a price comparison exercise I
undertook on 18.1.02. The first price listed is
the price of the Is It Fall Yet? DVD,
obtained either from Yahoo! comparison shopping,
or from the merchant's own site. The second is
the shipping cost for a UK buyer, obtained from
the merchant's help pages; shipping charges for
other European countries are likely to be similar.
The total, is, of course, the price a UK buyer
can expect to pay, in US dollars (unless stated
otherwise). Click on a total to convert it to
Pounds Sterling, Euros, and other currencies. The
contents of the currency window will be updated
if you click on another total. The fact that I mention, or
provide links to, certain products, sites and
merchants doesn't mean I recommend them, nor am I
claiming to know that the information which the
sites and merchants give is correct. Any merchant
you order from will be solely responsible for
processing any orders that you choose to make.
This includes accepting your order, fulfilling
your order, charging you, dispatching your order
and dealing with any cancellations, problems or
returns in relation to your order. No warranty is
implied about the accuracy of any information on
this page.
